Tutorial Converting Video for the PSP with PSPVideo9

Getting Started With PSP Video 9

Unfortunately, playing videos on your PSP is not as simple as just copying files to your PSP. This is due to the fact that the PSP only knows how to handle one video format (as opposed to the many PC formats like avi, mpeg, etc) and that it only plays video files that are named a certain way.

But fear not, with PSP Video 9, you can convert your PC video files in to PSP video files and copy them over to your PSP, all with a few simple mouse clicks. This page will take you through the installation of PSP Video 9 and provide links to some guides about Video/DVD to PSP conversion using PSP Video 9.

Setting Up PSP Video 9

First off, download PSP Video 9 Click Here.
If you want to playback the videos you converted on your PC you'll need QuickTime. While this is not a requirement, it is a good idea. You can download the latest version of QuickTime from Apple's website

International Users
Note:This step is only required if you want a language other than English

PSP Video 9 is available in many different languages and automatically installs the correct localized version of the Microsoft CLR. If your language is not supported in the install file, you MUST download the correctly localized version of the Microsoft CLR for your language. You can download it from this page by selecting the correct languge in the "Change Language" combo box. You need to do this before you install PSP Video 9.

You should now download and install PSP Video 9 if you haven't done so already (2,3). The PSP Video 9 installer will check to make sure you have the Microsoft CLR installed (it is required to run PSP Video 9). If you don't, the installer will automatically download and install it on your computer. The CLR is a 23MB file, so if the installer seems to be taking a long time, please be patient and let it run its course. This is a one time download only, so those not on broadband be patient, you won't have to re-download it again even when you upgrade PSP Video 9

Setting up Profiles

Before running PSP Video 9, you need some profiles to get the best results from each file you encode. Profiles are groups of settings that tell the program how you want it to encode your video.

If you have a fairly new/powerful PC: Download profiles.zip
If you have an older/slower PC or are in a real rush: Download profiles-1pass.zip
(The only difference between the 2 is that profiles-1pass only performs 1 pass of encoding instead of 2 when it creates the mp4 file. It is around 40% quicker but may reduce quality).

Extract the zip file. This will create a directory with 2 files: 'profiles.xml' and 'Copy file for me automatically.bat'.
You can either copy the file profiles.xml to C:\Program Files\pspvideo9 and choose yes to replace the existing file, or simply double click 'Copy file for me automatically.bat' to have it copy the file for you.

You are now set up with the profiles you need to encode video for the psp well. They all use the superior AVC codec rather than mp4-sp used in the standard profiles to give better compression while keeping the quality as good as possible.

The profiles are:
  • 01 - 4:3: This is for encoding normal, close to square video.
  • 02 - 16:9: This is for encoding widescreen video
  • 03 - 16:9-cropped 80 either side: This is for if you encode a widescreen video, but the video pspvideo9 creates looks stretched vertically (thigs are too tall and thin)
  • 04 - 4:3 MusicVideo: This is the same as profile 01, but with higher quality stereo audio

Using PSP Video 9

In order to get the videos onto your PSP you either need to connect your PSP to you PC via USB cable or insert your Memory Stick into a memory stick reader.

The first time you run PSP Video 9 you will see this screen. Just follow the on screen instructions, PSP Video 9 will attempt to automatically setup your PSP for video.

Converting Video

Now we are ready to convert your first video file.
  • Click "Convert" on the menu down the left hand side to go to the Convert section.
  • Click the "Transcode New Video" (1) button and select the file you want to convert from the window that pops up.
  • Choose the appropriate profile for your video from the "Quality Profile" drop down list (2). The profiles are detailed earlier in this guide.
  • Click the "Start" button (3)

If there are no files in your queue, conversion will begin immediately, otherwise the video will be stored in your queue.

Copying Video To your PSP

Once the conversion is complete, make sure you have your psp connected to its USB cable and it is in USB mode.
Click on the Copy button on the left of the screen to go to the Copy page, on the left hand side of the copy page you can see all the PSP video files on your PC.
  • First, make sure both drop down boxes (1) are set to AVC Folder
  • Select the video you just converted (2)
  • Click the "Copy Video to PSP" button (3). Its a good idea to make sure you have enough free space by looking at the info/graph in the bottom right hand corner of the 'Copy' screen.
The file should appear on the right hand side of the page meaning the file is now on your PSP.

You're done! You should now see the video after selecting Video from the PSP Menu.

If you are on firmware 2.81 or above, you may wish to manually copy the files you have converted from PSP Video 9's output directory (C:\Program Files\pspvideo9\MP_ROOT\100ANV01) to X:\VIDEO (X being the drive letter of your PSP when connected to your PC).

If this guide has helped you or you have any questions, please post a reply.

Converting a DVD

Here is a guide on how to convert video from a dvd to your psp with PSP Video 9. The 1 mistake I can see in the guide is that "Step 3. Go to Mode > File " Should read "Step 3. Go to Mode > IFO".

Once that guide starts talking about using PSP Video 9, I would recommend using the steps in this guide rather than encoding the way that guide tells you to. The info you really need from it is how to get the dvd ready to be used with PSP Video 9.

Additional Information (Not required reading to know how to encode)

I just posted the 4 main profiles I use, they are all AVC format, variable bitrate with a QScale setting of 25 (you can change it anywhere from 1: best quality but big files, to 30: lowest quality but smaller size). You can change this number in the profiles and save the changes if you want higher quality video at the expense of having bigger files). All but the music video profile have audio set at 64kbps mono, the music video one is 160kbps stereo.

You can change any of the settings and save them to the profile (or make a new one) very easily by (in pspvideo9) clicking 'setup' on the left, then the 'profiles' tab.

If anyone would like help on how to modify the profiles just send me (bah) a PM or post a reply to this thread.

You cannot rename the video files (outside of a specific format) on a psp with firmware lower than 2.81. The videos must also be placed in <PSP's Drive Letter>:\MP_ROOT\100ANV01 (this is where the PSP Video 9 copy feature will put them).

If your at firmware 2.81 or above you can just put the videos in :\VIDEO
and they can be named however you like.

Download PSPVideo9.

Hi,I've done all of the above but the software doesn't seem to see my PSP even though my PC is saying,'New Hardware Found and Ready to Use'.PSP Video 9 keeps saying 'please insert a disc into E drive' and 'please connect PSP to PC'.Any ideas? Thanks,Andy.

Yeah, sometimes PSP Video 9 doesn't recognise what drive the PSP's connected to.

All you need to do is to find out what drive your PSP is connected to (check this on My Computer: put your PSP in USB mode and it'll say Removable Disk (drive letter)). Then in PSP Video 9 click on the setup tab and select which drive it is from the PSP Drive drop menu, and press save. Now when you click on the copy tab it shouldn't ask you to connect your PSP to your PC.

Hope that helps.

Hey momo, i moved your post here because it has instructions on how to use a program called PSP Video 9 which will convert videos into MP4 format so you can watch them on your PSP. At the end of the post there's another link that will take you to a thread about converting DVD's into .avi format, so that PSP Video 9 can convert them.

Hope that helps.

Good Grief

I have done everything. I've converted the video using PSP Video 9, i got the destination pathway for the psp situated. I've moved the video to the PSP via the PSP Video 9 program. Everything is where it should be and the PSP still cannot find the video to play. I'm at my wits end here, can somebody help me.

P.s. I just got the PSP and it seems to be Firmware 2.71 if that has anything to do with it. It shouldnt, being that the PSP is supposed to play .mp4

Send a message via AIM to NotoriousJatt
did you put the vidoe file in the MP_Root/100MNV01 folder?
the file has to be named M4V10001 or M4V10002, etc.

I must say, PSP Video 9 is a great tool. Converting movie clips was a snap...only took a few minutes.

If you want to be able to convert them yourself rather than pay £20 to buy a simliar program in shops that does the same thing, then yes. It takes a few tries to really get the hang of it, but it's very useful if you plan to watch a lot of videos on your PSP.

Which link doesnt work?

Converting a 23 minute tvshow takes me around 10-15 mins to encode, 1 minute to copy to the PSP using these profiles (athlon 64 x2 3800+).

How about something a little easier? Here's Gordian Knot. If you install that and DVDDecrypter, you have all you need to do everything through making the avs. Install DVDDecrypter first or you'll have to set the path to it inside Gordian Knot later.

Run Gordian Knot and on the Ripping tab:
- Click the "Rip the VOBs" button to run DVDDecrypter. Use it to rip the DVD.
- Click the "Prepare the VOBs" button to run DGIndex. Open the VOBs and make the d2v project. This will also rip the audio into separate files.

Switch the the "Resolution" tab:
- Click the Open button in the bottom left corner and open the d2v file you created
- Set the "Input Resolution" to NTSC or PAL based on what the DVD was.
- Set the "Input Pixel Aspect Ratio" to 16:9 or 4:3 (look at the DVD case back - it'll say if the DVD is 16:9 encoded, otherwise it's 4:3 )
- Set "Crop (before resize)" to pixel and use the up/down controls next to the number fields on the right to crop all the black from the video (drag the knob on the preview window to a bright scene - that makes it easy to see what needs cropping)

Click on "Save & Encode" in the preview window. Set the deinterlacing if needed. Click on "Save" to create the avs script.

You can now quit Gordian Knot. You should now have some audio files that you can transcode with BeLight, and an avs file you can use with PSPVideo9 or 3GP or any other app you use to make PSP videos.

Hey wait a minute hold the phone!

I did everything that's indicated, but my damn program (PSP VIDEO 9) doesn't convert my MP4 videos, heres the deal:

I did every step to "transscode new video", selected my profile and start transcoding, but GOD knows why, when I tried to copy it to my psp, there's no video transcoded in "MY PC" box! It does not appear! And I've checked my destination folder, and it matches with the "my pc" copy box! what did I did wrong???
Please! Any help will be regarded!!!

Generally, PSPVideo9 simply skips transcoding when there's an error... that or crash. Make sure everything is correct, especially paths in the avs file. You can tell an avs file is correct by playing it in Media Player Classic. If it's fine, it'll play like a normal AVI. If it's got a problem, MPC will tell you the problem.
