tricking the firmware

in my inexperience i downloaded firmware version 3.03 . i have been trying to find a way to downgrade it but no such way yet exists. so what would happen if i was to download version 2.71, edit it in he pbp unpacker/sfo editor i found at pdc.me.uk - pbp unpacker, then load it up as if i were updating my firmware. i am hesitant to do this because i know very little about firmware and i dont want to damage my psp. any feedback would be very much appreciated

It probably wont work and screw stuff up, im no expert on this in the mods & hacks deptmnt but seems as tho the updates are designed fully to work how they are designed too. And if it was that easy we would av heard of it by now.
Feel free to try tho and post ur results.

You say you know very little about the inner workings of the firmware, and though I doubt you'll get any further than that error, I wouldn't go messing with things trying to downgrade your psp. Leave it to the experts like DAX.

Theres been lots of great news in the firmware hacking scene lately with the 2.8 downgrader, and (amazingly) a TA-82 downgrader, not to mention 3.02oe-b custom firmware. Be patient, dont upgrade further and hope for the best.

thanx. i guess patience is a virtue. i am still curious though. when i extracted eboot.pbp i got a .sfo file, a .png icon, and a .psp and a .psar file which i cant open to look at/edit. i could and did edit the .sfo. i changed the data in the key entitled "UPDATER_VER" from 2.71 to 3.04. while i was unsuccessful, the program did begin to run so i figure there is a problem in either the .psp or the .psar file. (according to this file extention reference a .psp is the firmware for a PSP so at least i know what to change. im not disregarding your advice. i love my psp. im just speaking theoretically

By all means mess with things mate, was just warning you that even if you were to discover an exploit that leads to a downgrader, in the process you could quite likely brick your psp.

Guys like DAX are hard at work on similar goals, and they have a lot of experience. Even the people who test their downgraders/custom firmwares generally have a modchip so they can recover their system if it gets bricked.

With each new firmware sony have increased the security and it becomes harder to crack.
