Homebrew is just a name for unofficial software.

Sony tries to lock down the PSP to control what can run on it, hackers find ways around this and allow unofficial software to run.

Popular homebrew ranges from emulators that allow you to play games designed for other systems to a GPS mapping application.

homebrew is pretty much games or apps that people make by themselves, coded for the psp

An emulator is a program that sets up an environment that allows programs (games) to run on a system other than the one they were written for without modifying the code.

In terms of games on the PSP, emulators allow you to play games from other consoles (SNES, Genesis, GBA etc) on your PSP.

Emulators are unofficial programs so they are considered homebrew.

There is an official PS1 emulator for the PSP by sony also.

Thats called piracy and leads to developers not bothering to make PSP games any more.

If you want a PSP game, buy it.
