greetings and welcome to the boards man
there are no different `versions` of the psp as such, only the different colour casings, what you may be refering to are the firmware versions. they are released by sony periodically to enhance the systems functionality, such as media players and web browsing bits n pieces etcetc, i bought my psp a week or two ago, its firmware version was 2.8+, and after the recent update its on 3.1, this gives a few newer features, such as a visualisation screen when playing back mp3s, theres something there also which caters for a camera attachment which is soon to be released (maybe) and a few other bits n bobs i havent really looked into at this time
the updates also prevent possible security breaches and new games when they are released wont run on lower versions of the firmware
its also there to help prevent piracy.

there are however `degrades` available, these lower the firmware versions on psp`s as there are `homebrew` applications and simple games which you can load up onto the memorystick, the modern firmware versions wont allow this, there are risks involved in downgrading (im lead to believe)
me, personally, i wont be downgrading. i dont want a rather expensive paperweight !!

hope that clears things up a little
or you scratching your head even more !!

If you're based in the UK, Game Station are doing a good deal I think.

Buy a base pack PSP (£149.99) and get any game for £15.

As I'm abroad regularly on business, I have been keeping an eye on the PSP in the US, Singapore, Australia, China and Japan, and overall they're within £10-£20 of the UK price. So you won't be ripped off if you buy in Europe.

As regards to the web, I have never trusted Ebay as great as I think it is, and even though Amazon's price of a PSP is a little less than £150, it ends up slightly more expensive than at Game Station if you get a game worth about £25+ with it.

Hope this helped.

Regards,
